Start Prepping for Giving Tuesday NOW

Charitable giving across the globe has seen a spirited and groundbreaking year. Giving USA’s Annual Report stated that individual giving rose by nearly four percent in 2016, and for only the sixth time in 40 years, rose in all nine major giving categories. In the midst of this promising shift, 2017’s Giving Tuesday is more important than ever for boosting both new and returning donor involvement. There’s truly never been a better time to ramp up energies for this online day of community and generosity.

Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, landing just a few days after the ever-popular Black Friday.  But Black Friday’s charitable sister is growing in recognition, uniting seasonal spending with our growing need to connect and support one another. Last year’s Giving Tuesday’s trackable donations reached over 1.56 million gifts, totaling upwards of $180 million worldwide.  Combined with the overall growth in charitable involvement, this upcoming year is bound to see an even greater online presence.

The #GivingTuesday movement was launched in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y, and increased processed gifts on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving by 53% in just one year.  Since then, the global online spread of the #GivingTuesday hashtag slowly refocused the energy of Thanksgiving back to a time of giving, encouraging new and returning donors to set aside donations for this social media expression of sharing. In fact, this year’s #GivingTuesday Report also found that giving frequency of Giving Tuesday donors increased, marking a lasting change in each donor’s behavior. 

The past two years have also employed the #MyGivingStory contest, a way to engage online givers to share their story and reasoning behind giving to a particular charity.  It’s these engagements that provide opportunities to build personal, lasting relationships with donors, focusing back on your organization’s unique mission and personal impact.
